Manchester Cup @ Rock Hill, SC

Brookland-Cayce will be participating in the inaugural Manchester Cup at Manchester Meadows Soccer Complex in Rock Hill on Saturday, March 31. The Bearcats will face defending Class 4A State Champion Northwestern (11-1) at 3:30 p.m. on Carlisle Field. The Trojans are currently ranked #1 in the state's largest classification and #4 in the NSCAA South Region Poll.

Admission to the event is $10 and there are no individual match tickets. The Manchester Cup is hosted by Winthrop University and will feature an additional high school match between Class 4A squads Aiken vs. Fort Mill. The matches will be 70 minutes in length.

The Manchester Cup, dubbed "The Premier College Soccer Classic in the South" will feature seven collegiate teams along with one professional side. The college teams are participating as part of their Spring Season -- College of Charleston, Clemson, Davidson, Furman, South Carolina, UNC-Wilmington, and host Winthrop. The professional team, the Wilmington Hammerheads, compete in the USL Second Division.

B-C Uses "Colombian Exchange" In Win Over Rival

Cayce, SC -- Brookland-Cayce used four second-half goals to bounce arch-rival Airport before a great soccer crowd at The Cage Friday night. The Bearcats and Eagles battled to a scoreless opening period, but Colombian exchange student Miguel Estrada Lopez registered a hat-trick to power the B-C attack in the second half. German exchange student Max von Danwitz scored the Bearcats final goal. B-C improves to 43-11-4 against Airport since the 1973-74 season and are 22-1 against the Eagles since 1991 under Coach Heise.

Bearcats Hold Tigers

Swansea, SC - #8 Brookland-Cayce blanked Region 4-3A foe Swansea 8-0 on the road Tuesday night to improve to 2-0 in region play and 7-4-1 overall. Swansea fell to 0-3 in the region and 2-6 overall.

CN Upends B-C

Cayce, SC -- SCISA #2 Cardinal Newman edged Class 3A #8 Brookland-Cayce 2-1 at The Cage Thursday night before a terrific home crowd in the second annual Congaree Shield competition. The Cardinals, coached by B-C alum and longtime assistant Will Eudy ('95), struck for a goal midway through the first half and added a second midway through the second period. The Bearcats rallied with a goal from freshman talisman Taylor Lewis in the 73rd minute to cut the deficit in half, but time ran out on the B-C rally. Congratulations to Coach Eudy and assistant coaches Benjie Poston ('97) and David Faulkenberry ('98) that were also former Bearcats!

B-C Bombs Rebels

Johnston, SC -- Brookland-Cayce used hat-tricks by freshman Taylor Lewis and junior Jose Guzman to pace the Bearcats to an 11-0 victory past Region 4-3A rival Strom Thurmond Tuesday night at JET Middle School. The Bearcats other six scores came from junior Brandon Boyd, Colombian exchange student Miguel Estrada Lopez, seniors Carlos Harris and Isai Saucedo, and junior Brodie Wall. The shutout was collected by senior JC Gypin and freshman Christopher Duzan. B-C improves to 6-3-1 and 1-0 in the region, while STHS falls to 6-3 and 2-1 in region play.

Bearcats Outclaw Wolverines

Cayce, SC -- Class 3A #10 Brookland-Cayce overcame a lethargic first half hour of play versus the Walker School of Marietta, GA to produce two late first half goals to kickstart a Bearcats rally Saturday afternoon at The Cage. The Walker School entered the match ranked #6 in Class 2A/1A in the Peach State. B-C fell behind just 2:29 into the match as an unorganized defense allowed an easy Wolverine goal and put the Bearcats in the hole early in the game. The Bearcats answered in the 36th minute as senior Carlos Harris netted a goal off a flip throw-in. In the 40th minute, B-C took the lead on another long throw-in from senior Peter Koutrakos, as junior Robby Setzler connected on a head-flick from sophomore Adam Keller to give the Bearcats an improbable 2-1 halftime advantage. In the second stanza, B-C struck early as junior Jose Guzman followed up a bobbled ball by the Wolverines goalkeeper for the final margin.

Aiken Escapes With Victory at The Cage

Cayce, SC - Class 4A #14 Aiken escaped with a 2-1 penalty-kick victory over Brookland-Cayce Thursday night at The Cage. The Bearcats, ranked #10 in Class 3A, played their best overall game of the year, but could not capitalize on their domination of the first 25 minutes of play and Aiken staked a 1-0 lead midway through the second stanza. B-C equalized minutes later on the best combination play of the year that featured first-rate soccer from freshman Taylor Lewis and sophomore Adam Keller before a deadly header from senior Carlos Harris. In the PK Shootout, Aiken won out 4-2 despite conversions from juniors Robby Setzler and Brandon Boyd.

B-C Edges Dreher in Shootout

Columbia, SC -- #10 Brookland-Cayce rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to down 3A arch-rival #8 Dreher 2-1 via a penalty kick shootout at venerable Memorial Stadium to improve to 4-2-1 overall and 3-0 in the regular season. The Blue Devils struck first just 12:33 into the match as sophomore Byron Quintoa tallied a strike from 23 yards out to stake Dreher to an early 1-0 advantage. The Bearcats played a much more inspired second half and were rewarded in the 57th minute as freshman Taylor Lewis netted a flick from junior Robby Setzler off a senior Peter Koutrakos throw-in to level the match. The teams battled to a draw the remainder of the match and the shootout heroics were left to senior netminder JC Gypin, who registered two crucial saves and was aided by a first-kick miss and three consecutive Bearcat conversions (Miguel Estrada Lopez, Tim Duzan, and Setzler) to give B-C the vital early season victory on away soil.
