Bearcats Clip Falcons

Cayce, SC -- Class 3A #11 Brookland-Cayce edged #15 A.C. Flora, 1-0 at The Cage Wednesday night. The Bearcats, still searching for their '09 identity, may have taken a huge step forward in finding their persona with a gritty effort that the entire team contributed. Senior Manuel Guerra set up junior Taylor Lewis' penalty kick conversion in the 30th minute after he was tripped up from behind in the penalty box. B-C's defense was stellar and blanked the Falcons, who had managed a score in each of their previous preseason scrimmages and their season-opening victory against Ben Lippen (3-1). The Bearcats are scheduled to play versus Clinton Saturday at Presbyterian College (weather pending).

B-C Makes Solid Showing at CSC

Despite a weather-interrupted trip to Mount Pleasant for the 11th Annual Carolina Soccer Classic, the Bearcats posted a respectable 0-1-2 mark in one of the state's premier preseason boys tournaments. B-C opened with a 0-0 draw against Class 4A James Island on Friday night and followed that performance with a controversial 2-2 tie versus 4A Fort Dorchester in the nightcap. The Bearcats seemed to have a 2-1 victory in hand, but a seemingly endless clock allowed the Patriots to draw level with just one second remaining!?!?!?!?!?!

On Saturday, Brookland-Cayce faced Class 2A four-time defending state champion Bishop England and fell 2-0 to the Battling Bishops. The Bearcats were scheduled to square off against fellow Class 3A opponent Hilton Head Island on Sunday, but inclement weather halted those plans.

In all, it was a very productive weekend for Brookland-Cayce. The team was able to enjoy some "bonding time" together at the Best Western Patriots Point as well as at Subway, a great dinner Saturday night at Zeus Grill & Seafood, followed by a nightcap at the Ye Old Fashioned Ice Cream & Sandwich Cafe. To top it off, B-C escaped the tournament relatively injury free aside from some soreness, bumps & bruises, and a few guys with some illness. We're looking forward to the regular season!
