Personal aside -- if you could bottle that kind of atmosphere, the intensity of the match, the excellent officiating, and the incredible players on the field, then you have what high school sports (not just soccer) is all about and what sets it apart from everything else!

Thanks for the season B-C players, parents, faculty, friends, and alumni -- it's been a great ride in 2008!

B-C Wins Epic Battle

Cayce, SC - #5 Brookland-Cayce claimed an epic victory Saturday night at The Cage with a 3-2 overtime decision over #8 Myrtle Beach. The Seahawks opened the scoring in the 23rd minute as Mark Hubbard finished a masterful set piece to lead 1-0. The Bearcats would battle back and get on the board in the 39th minute as Eduardo Adam finished a brilliant combination from seniors Josh Davis and Robby Setzler to level the match 1-1 at the half.

In the second stanza, the Bearcats applied lots of pressure to Myrtle Beach, but could not find the back of the net and overtime was to be played.

In the first period of OT, B-C received a penalty kick and it was converted by Adam giving the Bearcats a 2-1 advantage. However, the Seahawks had other plans. Playing their second consecutive overtime contest from behind, Myrtle Beach rallied for a tremendous effort goal by William Lee and seemingly crushed Brookland-Cayce's hopes. In the 99th minute, the game turned for good in the Bearcats favor as German exchange student Christoph Holzwarth collected a ball near midfield and raced towards the Seahawks penalty box. Firing a measured shot from 25 yards out, Holzwarth beat goalkeeper Chris Leftis for a dramatic goal that set off a wild celebration at The Cage! The victory gave Coach Kevin Heise his 300th career victory in the most special and fitting fashion.

Congratulations to Myrtle Beach on an outstanding game and season - their kids really left it on the field. Brookland-Cayce (19-5-1) will travel to region rival Chapin (21-3) for the Lower State Championship Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. at Cecil Woolbright Stadium.
