Late Goal Lifts Socastee

Myrtle Beach, SC -- Class 3A #3 Socastee (20-2) used a late goal to eliminate #9 Brookland-Cayce (13-11-2) in the Second Round of the state playoffs.

The game was originally slated for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff, but due to lightning in the area, the game did not kickoff until 8:25 p.m. B-C managed a goal shortly before the end of the first half on a Josh Davis corner kick to Carlos Harris for the Bearcats 1-0 intermission advantage.

In the second half, the host Braves, champions of Region 6, pressed B-C, but the Bearcats defense held strong behind a stellar effort from All-State goalkeeper JC Gypin who made several acrobatic saves to keep Brookland-Cayce ahead. In the 64th minute, Socastee was awarded a very questionable penalty kick by referee Mike Miller, who claimed that Gypin "tackled" a Braves player in the box after a scramble in front of the goal. Socastee converted the penalty kick to level the match at 1-1 and the gift-goal gave the hosts a much needed boost in confidence and spirit. The Braves managed a furious attack in the late stages of the game that resulted in an 85-yard counter by sophomore sensation Justin Watson who completed a full-field transition with a left-footed bomb at the 88:40 mark.

Socastee advances to host North Myrtle Beach in the 3A Quarterfinals. The Chiefs defeated Region 5 Champion Wilson 4-0 in their Second Round match at South Florence HS.
