Varsity Washed Out at CSC

The Brookland-Cayce Varsity boys soccer team was washed out of their opening weekend at the Carolina Soccer Classic February 22-24 due to inclement weather on Thursday/Friday. The soccer fields at the Patriots Point Soccer Complex were deemed unplayable by the Mount Pleasant Recreational Department and no contingency plan to play the matches was implemented.

The Varsity team adapted to the change and visited historic downtown Charleston for several hours on Saturday and then watched a multitude of college games hosted by the College of Charleston at their Patriot's Point CofC Stadium.

The Bearcats were able to visit with alumns Troy Lesesne (2001 - CofC Asst. Head Coach); Christian Patton (2006 - CofC Women's Player); Cally Baxley (CofC Cheerleader); and JC Gypin (2007 - Limestone College goalkeeper).

The Varsity squad enjoyed a quality meal at Zeus Grill & Seafood Restaurant followed by an ice-cream treat at Baskin-Robbins.

The Bearcats will attempt to add two regular season matches to make-up the matches missed in the preseason tournament.

B-Team Have Success at Tourney

Columbia -- The Brookland-Cayce B-Team registered a 1-2-1 mark at the inaugural Warrior Invitational hosted by E.L. Wright Middle School this past weekend.

The Bearcats drew with White Knoll's B-Team (1-1) and lost to Summit Parkway (0-3) on Friday and dropped a decision to E.L. Wright (1-2) before besting WK in overtime, 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. The "B's" will return to action on Wednesday, February 27 with their final scrimmage versus Dreher at 6:00 p.m. at The Cage.

Congratulations to Coach Christopher Hooker's charge for a positive start to the 2008 campaign!

Website Hacked

The Bearcats Soccer website at www.scsoccer.com/bcsoccer was victim to a hacker's ploy this past weekend and the company in New Jersey that hosts the site is working to repair the website. However, they are having to use older files and much of the updated information has been temporarily removed. I will work to correct this as soon as possible.

B-C Assists USC with C.A.P.S. Clinic

Special thanks to the USC Men's Soccer program and head coach Mark Berson, assistant coaches Bert Molinary and Mike Babst on allowing the B-C boys to assist with their annual C.A.P.S. Clinic Sunday, February 17 at the USC Indoor Facility. The clinic serves a fund-raiser for Children's Chance which helps families affected by pediatric cancer.

After joining the USC men in forming a human tunnel for Zig the Pig (the official mascot of Children's Chance) to enter the fieldhouse, the Bearcat soccer players along with Carolina's players worked with the young players on soccer skills.

Also, 1989 Bearcat soccer alum Jim Koutrakos was interviewed for the article as his five-year old son Phillip was participating in the clinic. The report from Jim is that he was extremely sore from the Alumni game on Saturday! :-)

Bearcats Start Preseason With Victory

Columbia -- Class 3A #8 Brookland-Cayce downed defending Class 4A State Champion and current #1 Spring Valley 2-1 in the preseason opener for both sides.

The Vikings struck first in the 30th minute, but the Bearcats responded on the ensuing kickoff as German exchange student Christoph Holzwarth took pass from senior Brodie Wall and beat a defender then sliced a perfect pass to Brazilian exchange student Eduardo Adam, who shook off two defenders to slot home the equalizer.

In the second half, B-C tallied the winner in the 56th minute as senior Tim Duzan took a free-kick restart and drilled a dipping shot at the SV keeper who could only body-down the wicked strike. The rebound was coolly finished by sophomore talisman Taylor Lewis. Brookland-Cayce held off a furious Spring Valley rally and sophomore goalkeeper Chris Duzan made several point-blank saves to preserve the upset victory.
