B-C Posts 1-2-1 Palmetto Cup Mark
Brookland-Cayce recorded a 1-2-1 overall mark in the 16th Annual Palmetto Cup March 26-29.
The Bearcats lost an emotional game to Class 2A #1 Bishop England 2-1 in the opener. B-C had a questionable goal called back, despite playing perhaps their best match of the year.
In the second match against Class 4A #15 Dutch Fork, the hangover of the BE match was too much as NSCAA All-American and USC signee Danny Cates willed the Silver Foxes to a 3-1 victory.
In a turn of fortunes on Friday, Brookland-Cayce played their most inspired match in the past two years as they denied Tennessee's Dobyns-Bennett a spot in the semifinals with a 1-1 draw. The match was reminiscent of past Bearcat Soccer glory as the team played with a passion not often displayed since the late 90s and early 2000s!
In the final match of the four-day tournament, B-C persevered to post a 2-1 victory over Kempsville of Virginia. The Bearcats, depleted by the loss of three starters and one additional serious injury in the match, managed to shuffle the lineup and pick up their first win in the prestigious Palmetto Cup since 2006.
Congratulations to Brazilian foreign-exchange student Eduardo Adam on his selection to the All-Tournament Team. Eduardo scored a goal in all four tourney matches!

Many nations come together on the field for Brookland-Cayce
Akilah Nelson, The State - MidlandsPreps.com
The face of Brookland-Cayce soccer is an international one.
“We have maybe eight kids on our roster that you probably think of as the typical American soccer player, but then we’ve also got this very diverse group,” coach Kevin Heise said.
The Bearcats roster boasts four foreign exchange students this year.
Tyll Weyer and Christoph Holzwarth are from Germany. Miljan Kaludjerovic is from Montenegro. Eduardo Adam is from Brazil. All four have started for the Bearcats (5-1).
“We usually get four or five transfer students at Brookland-Cayce every year, but this year they just happened to be four guys and all of them wanted to play soccer,” Heise said. “It’s never happened like that before that I can remember.”
Heise wasn’t worried about the exchange students forming a team within the team. The Bearcats were already a diverse group, with junior Kwabena Nkansah-Amankra, from Ghana, and another athlete from South America.
“I knew our guys would make these players feel comfortable,” he said. “They’ve just kind of fit right in.”
Adam said the Bearcats have been family to the exchange students and that all the athletes have eagerly shared their various cultures.
Having the common ground of soccer to start on made relating to one another much easier, he said. Then, the young men quickly found out they shared other interests.
“I’ve always liked hip hop, and a lot of my teammates listen to hip hop, too,” Adam said.

Chapin 4-1 B-C
Cayce, SC - Class 3A #3 Chapin steamrolled #6 B-C 4-1 at The Cage Thursday night before a great crowd in Cayce.
Brookland-Cayce struck first as a Josh Davis throw-in was touched by an Eagle defender and gave the Bearcats a short-lived 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute. Chapin answered with a goal just two minutes later off a follow-up on a failed punch-clear attempt and then drew a penalty kick in the 38th minute.
In the second half it was all Chapin as the Eagles struck for two quick strikes to open the stanza and push the advantage to 4-1.
The two teams will meet again at Cecil Woolbright Stadium on April 17.

The State Newspaper Feature - Eduardo Adam
By Akilah Nelson 3/19/2008Eduardo Adam has an agenda.
The Brazilian exchange student is hoping to use his junior season at Brookland-Cayce to help the Bearcats bring home a Class 3A title.
“When I leave here, I want to go back with a championship. I don’t want to go back, just say I scored a lot of goals but we didn’t win,” said Adam, who has tallied five goals.
Coach Kevin Heise saw Adam’s potential in the fall, when he played for the Congaree Rapids club team.
“Eduardo, or DuDu we call him, is a striker, and on this team, that’s what we’ve been lacking the past couple of years,” Heise said. “It was a shot in the arm to have him.”
As frequently as Adam scores, it is not his favorite part of the game.
“The best part is when the referee blows the whistle, the game is over and we won,” Adam said with a laugh. “Then I get to go celebrate with these teammates.”
That is important to him, because his teammates are the reason behind every one of Adam’s goals.
“I don’t score because I want people to notice me. I score so they can win, because I know they need me to score,” Adam said. “This is my only year here, but this is the last year for the seniors, so I want to help win a championship for them.”
“At home, high school soccer is not a big thing, but all year I’ve been here, everybody has been looking forward to our soccer season,” said Adam, who plays school and club soccer in his home of Parana, Brazil. “It’s really important, so I want to do well for them.”
Though Adam always had planned to study abroad, he wasn’t sure he would land at a school with a soccer program. Now he is contemplating a return to the U.S. to play college soccer.
“At first, I wasn’t sure how it would be, to be far away from my family for so long, but my host family has been very good to me. And B-C soccer, this family has been good, too,” Adam said.
Heise said if Adam wants to return to the U.S., Brookland-Cayce’s staff would try to help make it possible. Adam, he said, is a deserving young man.
“That’s one of the things with these exchange programs — they tend to get kids that are highly motivated,” said Heise, who has three other exchange students on his team. “DuDu, like the other guys, he’s a coach’s dream.”

B-C Edges SA in Shootout
Bearcats outlast Thoroughbreds in epic prep battle
By Kyle Heise 3/13/2008
CAYCE, SC - Brookland-Cayce needed extra time to edge South Aiken Thursday night, but there were no "losers" in this match. In a well played high school soccer match by both sides, B-C outlasted SA 2-1 at The Cage in the home opener for the Bearcats (3-0), which was decided via a penalty kick shootout that Brookland-Cayce captured 3-0.
South Aiken (3-3) got on the board first just five minutes from intermission when Jason Large heaved a throw-in to the back of the six-yard box where Andrew Hare rattled home the header off the crossbar for a 1-0 halftime lead. Both teams attempted three shots on goal in the first stanza.
B-C picked up the tempo in the second half and were rewarded in the 52nd minute when Eduardo Adam knocked in a cross from Cristoph Holzwarth to level the match at 1-1. Both teams sent opportunities close during the rest of regulation, but overtime was to be played.
After a scoreless 10 minutes ensued, B-C blanked South Aiken 3-0 during the shootout as Bearcats' goalkeeper Chris Duzan made saves on the first two attempts and the third SA try caromed off the crossbar as Holzwarth, Adam, and Robby Setzler all sent their tries into the back of the net for Brookland-Cayce.
South Aiken will entertain Silver Bluff (1-3) tomorrow night while B-C will host Blythewood (3-3-1) at The Cage on Monday.

C.F. Bolden Stadium
Columbia, SC
#8 Brookland-Cayce used an efficient attack throughout the match to down Columbia 3A rival #15 A.C. Flora, 4-0 at Bolden Stadium. The Bearcats raced to a flurry of shots in the matches opening minutes before the turning point in the game occurred. Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Duzan was cautioned in the 15th minute after a questionable penalty kick was awarded to the Falcons and was sent off. Replacing the B-C #1 in goal was junior athlete Rico Jackson, who had never played in the goal prior. Jackson was equal to the task as he dove to his left to stop a Chris Muthig penalty and covered the ensuing carom. The huge emotional lift fueled the Bearcats resolve as Brookland-Cayce scored twice in the next four minute span.
In the 17' junior Brazilian exchange student Eduardo Adam finished a brilliant buildup by seniors Jose Guzman and Chris Pinner to open the scoring and Guzman would add another goal at the 19' mark. In the second half Guzman would seal the game in the 45' on a follow up scramble off a Robby Setzler strike that somehow did not get netted. Senior midfielder Brodie Wall, who played perhaps his best game ever for the Maroon & Black, finished the match off with a terrific goal in the 47th minute.
