KANSAS CITY, Mo. -Savannah College of Art and Design women's soccer player Mallory Phillips has been named the NAIA National Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 12.
She was chosen out of a pool of conference player of the week performers among the 22 conferences, independents and unaffiliateds. It was the first national player of the week nod for the team in the program's history. Phillips is the third different SCAD athlete to earn a player of the week honor since the Bees rejoined the NAIA in 2003.
Phillips, a 5-foot-6 senior from Lexington, S.C., helped the Bees upset then-No. 6 Northwood (Fla.) University 3-2 in double overtime Oct. 11. It was the program's first win in the history of the all-time series - 11 meetings (1-7-3) - with the Seahawks, who also suffered their first loss of 2008. Phillips was part of the defensive unit that held the NAIA's leading scorer - Lisa Ohberg (22 goals) - to just one shot on goal.
No. 13 SCAD (7-4-0) returns to action Friday (Oct. 17) with a 5 p.m. conference match against Warner Southern College at the SCAD Athletics Complex in Hardeeville, S.C.
