'01 Alum Cason Serving USA

Keeping with the updates on Bearcats Soccer Alumni serving in the U.S. military, 2001 alum Sean Cason has just recently completed his second tour in Iraq and is now stationed at Fort Leavenworth, KS.

He wishes that he would be available for the Alumni Game in February 2008, but is looking forward to the biennial event in 2010. Cason is currently training soldiers at Fort Leavenworth.

B-C Soccer Alumn Knox Serving Country

Bearcat Soccer Alum David Knox, Class of 2002 emailed me an update on his whereabouts. David is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and then went to BOLC II and Infantry Officer Basic Course, before graduating from Ranger School in May. After Ranger School, David shipped off to Germany and is currently in Kuwait/Iraq with the 1st Infantry Division and he will serve as a Platoon Leader in the next few weeks.

He said that "all yourconditioning and pushing us so hard back in high school still pays dividends to me today in the Army, combat and Ranger school. You always pushed us to dig a little deeper, and Ranger school was just an extension of that. So thank you for teaching us not to be (sic) soft."

David was married two years ago (wife is April) and they have just moved to Schweinfurt, Germany for his first duty station. He is entertaining playing for a local semi-pro team in the area. David has this message for the current Bearcats -- "Best of luck to you and the team this upcoming season, I'll be keeping track of the games!" David also wishes that he could attend the Alumni game in February, but "duty calls."

2006 graduate Christian Patton (#14 in picture) played for the College of Charleston in their match at #5 Texas A&M in College Station, TX on Sunday, September 2 ... FMU's Stenard completed the scoring when she scored on a 15-yard shot in the 70th minute, utilizing assists from freshman Gabi Byrd and redshirt-freshman Emily Logan Setzler. Francis Marion defeated Gardner-Webb 4-1. The Lady Patriots will travel to #9 Florida State on Friday, September 7 ... Redshirt-freshman Ashton Tatum is starting for the Lander Bearcats and they are off to a 2-0 start ... Wofford's Meredith Calcina (2006) has played in both of the Terriers wins ... 2005 alum Mallory Phillips has received a full-scholarship at Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) ... Mallory, a Junior, was named Team Captain this past spring and was named Honorable Mention to the Florida Sun Conference Academic Team with a 3.5 GPA! ... Newberry dominates in 5-0 win over Brevard

Indians outshoot Tornados 23-6; Dieterich ties school shutout record - 9/5/2007

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Seth Addison scored twice as Newberry College rolled over Brevard College 5-0 in NCAA Division II Men's Soccer action Wednesday afternoon. Four different Indians scored as Newberry returned to its high scoring ways.

After two games in which the Indians scored just one goal, Newberry came out firing early against the Tornados. Addison (Accra, Ghana) started the scoring for the Indians when he took a throw in from Shane Abbott (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) and headed it off both the goalie and the cross bar for his fifth goal of the season in the fourth minute.

Abbott would get involved in another goal in the 29th minute when he sent a pass into the box for Debola Ogunseye (Lagos, Nigeria) who settled it with his chest before hitting a spinning kick past the goalie into the top left corner of the goal. The goal was Ogunseye's sixth of the season.

The Indians continued to put on the pressure, out shooting the Tornados 12-3 in the first half, but they were unable to convert going into the half still up just 2-0.

Newberry continued its offensive attack in the second half, scoring again in the 53rd minute to take a 3-0 lead. Midfielder Scott Busbee (West Columbia, S.C.) received a pass from Addison and went on a run up the right side before firing a shot from 15 yards out past the goalie in the left side of the net. The goal was the first of the sophomore's collegiate career.

Just six minutes later freshman Jovan Rochford (Arima, Trinidad) scored his first collegiate goal when he found some space in the middle of the field and rocketed a shot into the lower left corner of the goal.

Newberry capped its scoring in the 63rd minute when Addison took a pass from midfielder Marvin Torvic (French Guiana) and beat both his defender and the goalie before depositing the ball into the net for his second goal of the game.

The Newberry offense was relentless as the Indians took 23 shots and had 12 corner kicks in the game.

Will Dieterich (Tampa, Fla.) was never really challenged on his way to a second straight shutout. The Tornados managed just three shots on goal and none from close range. The shutout was Dieterich's fourth of his career which ties him with Bryan Linn for first place all time in the Newberry record books. He also ties the record for shutouts in a season with 2.

Addison's five point day ties him with Ogunseye for the team lead with 13 points. Both Ogunseye and Addison have six goals and one assist on the season.

Ogunseye's goal gives him 51 career points which moves him past Jason Wiggins, who had 49 career points, into sole possession of third place in the Newberry record books.

The Indians' next game is on Saturday at 2 p.m. when they travel to Harrogate, Tenn., to open up conference play against Lincoln Memorial. The game should be a good test for Newberry as the Railsplitters began the year ranked fifth in the country but have fallen out of the top 25 after starting the year 2-2.
