Kyle Heise Selected NSCAA National HS ACOY

Congratulations to Brookland-Cayce HS assistant boys soccer coach Kyle Heise on being selected the NSCAA National HS Assistant Coach of the Year for 2011. Heise was also tabbed the NSCAA South Region HS ACOY and was named the national winner on January 13, 2012 at the NSCAA Convention in Kansas City, Missouri.

Heise is a BCHS alum, Class of 1989, and former Bearcat Soccer letterman. He has remained involved with the program for the last 23 years as an assistant coach on the B-C staff.

In addition to his role with the Bearcats, Heise is founder and director of SCSoccer.com - the official website of the S.C. High School Soccer Coaches Association (SCHSSCA). He is an active member of the SCHSSCA and serves on several prep soccer committees and assists with state championship and all-star game functions. He also is a coordinator for the NSCAA Girls Coach of the Year committee and assists with the state, region, and national Spring rankings. In 2010, Heise established an annual scholarship in the memory of his infant daughter, Kylie Marie, who passed away due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The scholarship is given to a BCHS boy and girl soccer player each spring who demonstrated excellence on and off the pitch for the Bearcats and the Congaree Rapid Soccer Association (CRSA).

Outside the prep game, Heise serves as Secretary for the CRSA, online play-by-play announcer for the University of South Carolina's men's and women's Gamecock soccer teams, and is an ardent supporter of the Arsenal F.C.

Attending the award ceremony will be a memorable experience for our five fine young athletes (and their coaches).

The NSCAA event, January 11-15, is the world's largest annual gathering of soccer coaches and the largest soccer convention in the world.

The 2011 season is well under way and our teams have been working hard to represent Brookland-Cayce High School on the pitch in a manner that we may all be proud (current team records are listed below). Our coaching staff strives to teach not only the elements of the “beautiful game” but also life lessons as we interact with our student-athletes including good sportsmanship.

I have been made aware of a couple of ugly incidents at recent matches that have not included our players, but our adult supporters. This cannot and will not be tolerated. I would like to remind all adults that we are in the business of educating youth and that we should all work to maintain civility and to provide our young people with quality role models. I certainly understand how emotions can be bent and torn during a tumultuous contest, but I ask that you refrain from the use of profanity, singling out players, and the verbal attacking of officials. If the adults in the stands do not adhere to this, they will be asked to leave the facility by the administrator or coach on duty.

Bearcat Soccer has earned a quality reputation on and off the pitch the last two decades and we want to maintain and build on that foundation. I know that you will join me in working to represent Brookland-Cayce Soccer in the finest fashion in the future.

JV Girls Post Runner-Up Finish at Irmo Tourney

The B-C JV Girls finished runner-up in the Black Division of the Irmo Preseason JV Tourney. Friday, February 25th, the Bearcats beat Gilbert 3-0 and tied Charlotte Catholic 3-3. On Saturday, B-C beat AC Flora 1-0 and then lost in the finals to White Knoll 3-1. Congratulations to coaches Gregg Brazell and Tony King and the JV girls team on their successful tournament.

The annual Maroon and Black soccer games will be held on Saturday, February 12th beginning at 9:30 am and ending at 1:30 pm. A parent meeting will be held at the conclusion of the games per schedule below. All parents are asked to attend.

The M&B schedule is as follows:

9:30 am -- Boys B-Team Game
10:30 am Game-- Girls JV (Start serving lunch to BB/GJV @ 11:45 am)
11:30 am Game-- Boys JV (Start serving lunch to BJV @ 12:45 pm)
12:30 pm Game-- Girls Varsity (Girls Parents Meeting @ 1:45 pm)
1:30 pm Game-- Boys Varsity (Boys Parents Meeting @ 2:45 pm)

As tradition dictates, winners will be given steak; losers will be given hot dogs. Players will be given a color-coded ticket by their coach immediately following their game which will indicate if they are to receive steak or a hot dog for lunch. The steak and hot dog lunches for players are free.

Parents, siblings and supporters are welcome to participate in purchasing a grilled chicken plate at a cost of $5.00 each. Please indicate below how many chicken plates you would like to purchase and return the bottom portion of this form to your soccer coach on or before WEDNESDAY, February 9th or add to the Maroon and Black Wiki listed below. The money for the chicken dinners will be collected at the gate on February 12th. You will be given a color-coded ticket, which must be presented at the line to obtain your grilled chicken plate. You can address any questions you have to Robin Gerzema at 479-8846 (cell) or mthtchr2@gmail.com or rgerzema@lex2.org.

Each player or parent is responsible for bringing their item to the cafeteria no later than 11:00 am on Saturday, February 12th. There will be labels for any dishes you bring so we will know what team they are for.

In addition, we need all players to bring one of the following:
Powerade Only (NOT Gatorade) – 20oz bottles (6 or 8 pack)
Or Only Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, Mello Yellow, Barq Root Beer, Orange Fanta or Vault – 12-pack 12oz. cans

A total of 384 soccer teams (142 boys, 242 girls) from throughout the United States have earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award for exemplary performance in the classroom as a team during the 2009-10 academic year. Among these programs are 60 schools receiving honors for both their boys and girls teams.

To qualify for the award, the team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.25 for the entire academic year. The team GPA is determined by adding every player's GPA, then dividing by the number of players.

Brookland-Cayce HS will celebrate "All-Sports Night" Friday, September 17 at halftime of the B-C/Columbia football game at The Cage. I need all returning boys soccer players to be in attendance and wear a BEARCAT SOCCER t-shirt or black Nike polo.

FYI: I have a girls U17 soccer match at 6:30 pm and will not be in attendance, but plan to get there as soon as my match is over. At any rate, Coach Schroer will be there to represent our program.

Fall Weight Room

Gilbert Summer Soccer Shootout Canceled for B-C

I regret to inform you that we will have to withdraw from the Gilbert Soccer Summer Shootout due to non-confirmations for the competitions this week. I have only heard from four players that were truly eligible for Monday. I have informed Coach Darlington at Gilbert that we are withdrawing from the week's competitions. I hate to do so, but when it's 11v11 and two matches in a night, we really needed to have 15+ confirmed and ready to go. WE WILL NOT HAVE ANY TRAINING OR GAMES THIS WEEK AS A RESULT.

I'm just returning from the Clash of the Carolinas and congratulations to 2010 graduates Chris Duzan (Team Captain) and Taylor Lewis (1 goal) who both played key roles in winning the all-star game for the first time for S.C.

Bearcats Star in SC Boys First Clash Victory

Congratulations to Coach Kevin Heise and Bearcat boys soccer players Chris Duzan and Taylor Lewis who helped lead the Sandlappers to their first win in the Clash of the Carolinas all-star match against North Carolina July 9 at Blackbaud Stadium on Daniel Island.

Duzan was selected as a Team Captain by his S.C. teammates and Lewis netted the Sandlappers first goal in the 3-2 victory. Duzan tallied six saves on the day, while Lewis played a very good match.

Message from Athletic Trainer

Coach and Parents of the Athletes,

This is Jennifer Dompier the Athletic Trainer here at BC.

You have excellent questions about the physicals. There will be many stations set up. The athletes will start at height and weights. ATC's will be recording the information. They then go to HR and Blood pressure (nurses and athletic trainers test and record). The students then visit a physical therapist or athletic trainer for the musculoskeletal exam.

If the Musculoskeletal exam goes well, they will then visit with a primary care physician (Dr. Levinson- BC's team doc will be there seeing most of our kids).
If the student has an abnormal musculoskeletal exam they will follow up with the orthopedist following their primary care doc exam.

The physical medical history questionnaire is designed to peg potential heart problems. If there are any cardiac flags they will be referred for an echo that will be handled at the Cardiac center. Echo's will be $50 and parents will have the option to have their kids screened preventively for the same cost. An Echo can run between $200-$400 regularly. We will most likely have a sign up for this service.
However, parents should be advised, that echos are not a standard for sports physicals no matter where you go and the kids will get a very thorough screening. Also, Echos tend to track hypertrophic heart tissue and is not designed to register Marfan's, heart murmers, or valve issues. There is a possibility that there will be a cardiologist on site for anyone with red flags. This we should know within the week.

Thank you Coach! Please spread the word and we hope to see all of our BC family at this event. Again, all of the proceeds come back to the athletic training fund so that we can buy all our supplies for the 2010-2011 school year.

Congratulations to B-C B-Team Coach Chris Hooker and his wife Sabrina on the birth of their second boy, Corbin!

Corbin decided that he was going to come on his own terms. Apparently that meant at 3:26 in the morning, almost 24 hrs. after his inducement. He weighs 7 lbs. 14 ounces and is 19 inches long with brown hair and blue eyes. Sabrina is doing awesome after what was a long and tiresome day!

The B-C boys B-Team will play Thomas Sumter Academy at the Patriot Park Sportsplex in Sumter on Saturday, April 17 at 11:00 a.m. The team will meet at BCHS in the locker room at 8:45 a.m. The team will leave via district bus at 9:00 a.m.

Directions from Columbia: Take Sumter Highway 378 to Sumter. As you approach Sumter, and just before you reach Shaw Air Force Base (that will be on your left) you will come to an intersection with a McDonald's on the right and a Food Lion. That is Highway 441, Patriot Parkway. Take a right on Patriot Parkway and go for about four miles. The Patriot Park Sportsplex will be on your right (across from the Fast ER Care). Travel time from Columbia is approximately one hour.

They will be at Moore Clinic in Lexington (off 378 at I-20). BCHS is scheduled for the 9-10 A.M. time slot. Only $10.00 per student 6th thru 11th grades. These physicals will be valid for the 2010-2011 school year. Proceeds from the BCHS registration go directly to the BCHS Sports Medicine Department.

The host Bearcats will be joined by nine teams from the Palmetto State as well as two out of state teams. As of this week, five of the 12 teams are ranked nationally by ESPN RISE in the "National Fab 50": #4 Farragut (Knoxville, TN); #6 Norman North (Norman, OK); #7 Northwestern (Rock Hill, SC); #9 Wando (Mount Pleasant, SC); and #34 Chapin (Chapin, SC). Rounding out the field are: Bishop England (2A #2); Brookland-Cayce (3A #6); Cardinal Newman (SCISA #1); Christ Church (1A #2); Fort Mill (4A #4); Pinewood Prep (SCISA #3); and Walhalla (2A).

A tournament pass costs $15 and individual matches is $5 at the gate. Palmetto Cup programs and T-Shirts will be on sale at The Cage and a concession stand will be open for all matches.

All matches will be played at The Cage on the campus of BCHS, weather permitting. All matches in group play during the tournament will be SCHSL regulation length (80 minutes). However, only Semifinals and Championship matches on Saturday will observe the 80 minute regulation time plus two five-minute overtime periods and penalty kicks if necessary. The Saturday 5th-11th Place matches will consist of two 30-minute halves and no overtime periods.

*** Should Farragut-TN reach the Semifinals, then the Admirals' opponent in the Semifinals will play in the Championship because FHS has to return to Knoxville for their school prom that night. Farragut, should they qualify for the Semifinals, will automatically play in the 8:30 a.m., Saturday contest.

Thanks to all of the Brookland-Cayce High School faculty and alumni who showed up in support for Ms. Quinette Jones as she battles breast cancer and for her continuing administration of B-C Athletics! The pre-match introduction by Mrs. Lynn Summer was outstanding!

Kudos to all of the volunteers - Larry Bunn (tickets) and Tammie Oswalt (merchandise/donations) - especially! The concession stand was in full force and the day flowed smoothly. We were all able to enjoy great weather and soccer in Cayce, S.C.

Soccer For A Cure - March 20, 2010

Brookland-Cayce High School will host three matches as part of their "Soccer For A Cure" Saturday at The Cage, March 20, 2010.

All three B-C boys soccer teams will play and the girls varsity squad may as well - more information forthcoming. The Bearcats appreciate the visits of Thomas Sumter Academy and Riverside HS, respectively, for making this event possible. The boys varsity match will feature a pair of Class 3A Top 10 teams for a super mid-March clash!

We will be honoring longtime BCHS Athletic Secretary Quinette Jones who is currently battling breast cancer, but is truly the "heart" of Brookland-Cayce HS.

Fans are encouraged to wear pink and make donations to Soccer For A Cure. Donations will be collected at the Concession Stand. Entry fee is $4.00 per person at The Cage. The early weather forecast has the temperatures in the upper 60s, so that should entice a good number of prep soccer fans and supporters of cancer research out to The Cage!
